Are you offering youth sailing camps this year?
Yes, we will have two sailing camps in June.

Here are a few things to know about the 2022 camp…

  • Dates:                  7-10 June and 21-24 June 2022, Tuesday thru Friday.
  • Weather              In central Alabama, the wind can be light or variable in June, which is not always ideal for sailing.  As sailing in light wind is a skill to develop, we endeavor to teach the kids to read the wind and sail in very little wind.  Then, when there is wind, they will be prepared to sail better.   Typically, we are not on the water during storms, waiting out any showers before returning to the water.  In the event of a weather event that precludes further activities that day, we will call the person on the contact sheet.  We are scheduling the camps over a 4-day period, anticipating that weather may cancel one day.  If we don’t lose a day for weather, the kids will simply be able to sail another day.
  • Times:                  9 AM to 3 PM daily.  Please be prompt, as we have a full day of activities.
  • Meals:                  Students should bring their lunch and snacks.
  • Water:                 Bottled water is furnished, as proper hydration is very important.
  • Tee-Shirts:          Long-sleeved sailing camp tee-shirts are included in the fee.  Thus, please indicate the appropriate tee-shirt size on the application form.
  • Personal Gear:  Students should bring a properly fitting PFD [life preserver], sun block lotion, wide-brimmed hat, beach shoes, swimsuit, towel, and a dry change of clothes for the ride home.
  • Parents:               Parents, siblings and friends are welcome to sit in on the presentations and relax under our pavilion.  You might even have the opportunity to sail yourself.
  • Students:            Students should be comfortable swimming in deep water and be able to swim unassisted for 100 ft.   The class is open to ages 7-17, with most in the 10/12-year range.
  • Class:                   Classes are limited to 15 students.
  • Location:             Dixie Sailing Club, 767 New Hope Church Road, Alex City, AL 35010.  We are on Google Earth and most other mapping apps.
  • Rate:                    The camp rate is $125, with a $15 discount for additional siblings or friends.
