An additional racing program that DSC racers participate in has the name “GRITS” which stands for “Great Racing In The South.” This racing program was developed in 2010 by Dennis Slaton of Lake Lanier Sailing Club and Dick Cline of Dixie Sailing Club. Prior to developing the program a problem existed of clubs scheduling regattas at their site on the same day as another club had scheduled one for their club. Slaton and Cline worked together with five Catalina 22 fleets in the southeast region to set up a schedule where for those five clubs, two in Tennessee, two in Georgia, and one in Alabama, they would hold their regattas on separate weekends, and that all would support each other’s events. A simple additional score was given to each racer depending on how they finished. Trophies are awarded to the first place racer in both Gold Fleet and Silver Fleet. To qualify for the trophy racers must race in at least three of the five scheduled regattas. Final score for the series is based on best three total points.
